Sri Lanka Wildlife

Sri Lanka is small in size, but huge for wildlife. It's the only place in the world where you can see the two largest creatures on the planet in the same day. The elephant is the world's largest land animal alive today and the blue whale is simply the biggest and most impressive animal to have ever lived on our planet.

This is just the beginning of Sri Lanka's wildlife though as it also has the highest concentration of leopards anywhere in the world, making for amazing safaris which also feature sloth bears, peacocks and wild boar. Visit the Turtle Hatchery on the beach and hold tiny baby turtles, sometimes even releasing them into the sea. Cheeky little monkeys can be found throughout Sri Lanka, you are even very likely to find them within the grounds of hotels in the Cultural Triangle, in Kandy and also in the national park, Yala. Watch out for them though, they are known as cheeky monkeys for a reason!

Elephants in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to see elephants. The Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) is one of the three subspecies of the Asian elephant. They are huge yet gentle, weighing up to 5tons and growing as high as 10ft! It's reported there are around 6,000 wild elephants in Sri Lanka and around 70% of them live outside the National Parks.

The best way to experience elephants in Sri Lanka is to see them in the wild on your own wildlife safari by jeep in one of the outstanding National Parks such as Minneriya National Park or Kaudulla National Park. The location will depend on where the most elephants sitings have recently been during your travelling dates and we will know where best to take you at the time. Both national parks are near each other within the cultural triangle. It's an amazing wildlife experience where you will get to see Sri Lankan elephants in their natural habitat and get an understanding of how they live.

Your elephant wildlife safari with Invite to Paradise will be in a specialist jeep with an expert local guide. You may even get to witness Sri Lanka’s great wild elephant migration known as “The Gathering”, which occurs during certain months every year. This is where massive herds of wild elephants come together from afar to bathe and play in the wild. To see it for yourselves in a safari jeep is an unforgettable once in a lifetime experience. You may also see other wildlife too such as wading birds, sambar deer, macaques, buffalo, crocodiles and monkeys. Flocks of birds all fish in the shallow waters here such as storks, large pelicans and cormorants.

sri lanka Elephant Orphanage, Pinnawala

Located not far from Kandy, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a world famous orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village, 13 km northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. By visiting here you can get up close and personal with elephants. for example you may be able to feed elephants fruit, touch them and have a photo taken with them. You may also see baby elephants being fed milk. Multiple times a day the herd or elephants cross the road and head walk down to the river bank for bath time. This is usually an unforgettable experience. It's fair to say that the orphanage isn't for everyone and the excursion gets mixed reviews from our guests, however many visitors find it to be a real highlight of their tour of Sri Lanka as you can absorb the beauty and power of these gentle jungle giants as they plod through the jungle and waterways of the Sri Lankan landscape.
