Maldives Travel Tips
Situated close to the equator, the Maldives enjoys a near constant temperature of around 30°C all year round. Its tropical climate has two distinct seasons: dry or northeast monsoon season from December to April, and the southwest monsoon season from May to November, which brings some rain.
Malé International Airport is located on Hulhulé Island next to the capital Male. The airport runs from one end of the small island to the other. As you fly over the Maldives you can spy glimpses of some of the gorgeous islands that make up this archipelago, which always makes for a unique and exciting experience.
On arrival visitors from all countries, including the UK, will be issued a complimentary 30-day visa. Visitors must have a passport that has at least six months validity left and a return air ticket for your flight out f the Maldives. You cannot take alcohol with you in to the Maldives because the import of alcohol or alcoholic goods is illegal, including duty free. If you would like to drink alcohol whilst staying in the Maldives then you have to purchase drinks from your island resort.
The Maldives local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), which is divided into 100 larees. However you don't usually need to worry about the local currency as all prices at the island resort are in US Dollars.
All major credit cards accepted in the Maldives including VISA, MasterCard and AMEX.
In the Maldives the official language is Dhivehi. As to be expected for such a popular holiday destination, English is widely spoken and understood, so all English speaking visitors will have no issues communicating with staff in the Maldives.
220/240volt AC at 50 cycles. Most resort islands are prepared for foreign visitors and their electrical appliances as they carry international adapters which are available upon request at the resort.
